MINUTES

Minutes of Spring Meeting, 24th April 2021

Jane Le Conte (Chairman) welcomed 29 ringers to the Spring meeting of the Channel Islands District of the Winchester & Portsmouth Guild of Church Bellringers, at St Pierre Du Bois, Guernsey

  1. Apologies for absence: Jersey – en bloc (Covid)
  2. Election of new members: Joe Allen (full) – Vale. Nor James (Probationary) – St Anne, Clare Hanbury (Probationary)- St Anne. Jeremy Penrose-Stupart proposed all 3 and was seconded by Paul Lawrence – all elected unopposed
  3. Helen McGregor gave notice of her intention to seek clarification/amendment of 8 bell striking competition rules at the next ADM in September: She explained that whereas the 6 bell rules gave express permission for a ringer to ring for 2 teams the 8 bell rules made no such allowance. Keeping the amendment narrow she sought only to permit Ay ringers in full time education in Guernsey to be permitted to ring for both Ay & Gsy. Duncan Loweth explained that the narrowness of the amendment reflected his desire not to ‘open the gates’ for multiple ringers ringing in 2 teams
  4. Nicky David pointed out that Sept 2021 will be the 40th anniversary of the first meeting of the Channel Islands District. Co-incidentally it will also mark our departure from Winchester & Portsmouth Guild and us becoming a Branch of the Salisbury Diocesan Guild of Ringers. Nicky wondered if we shouldn’t be having some special ringing – perhaps involving some/all of the remaining Founder Members of the District (Judy Collins, John David, Nicky David, Jane Le Conte, Phil Le Conte & Heather Winder). The possibility of a Dinner on the Friday evening, a celebratory cake & involving the media was greeted favourably by the meeting.
  5. AOB – none
  6. ADM – Sept 18th 2021, St Pierre du Bois

Results of the 8 bell inter-island striking competition. Duncan Loweth (Ringing Master) explained that covid had prevented a human judge coming from UK & so we had utilised the Hawkear facility at Town Church to determine the winner. Covid had precluded Jersey from entering this year and had also made it necessary for the committee to amend the test piece from a plain course of Kent TB Major to 8 plain courses of Bastow Major to ensure both remaining islands were able to take part. Janice Firth had kindly operated the Hawkear software and had prepared the following statement: I hope that both bands will be pleased with their ringing this morning and with their scores and will be inspired to move on to Kent. The second placed team rang significantly slower, their test piece took 10mins and 2 secs compared with 8mins and 49secs for the winners. The second placed band achieved a score of 85.67 – well done. The winning band’s score was 77.99. The winners were Guernsey
